Spode is a historic ceramic manufacturer founded in Stoke-on-Trent, England in 1770 by Josiah Spode. Around 1784, they developed a technique for underglaze painting using copperplate transfer technology, and later perfected fine bone china, a transparent white ceramic . In the early 19th century, they received the honor of being a purveyor to the British Royal Family, and produced many pieces beloved around the world, such as Blue Italian , which depicts an ancient Roman motif . Currently, they are under the umbrella of Portmeirion, and continue to preserve their traditions and craftsmanship.
This pattern, depicting a Chinese landscape, was very popular in 18th century England. The beautiful contrast of blue and white and the design depicting a mythological tale are characteristic.
