Blue Italian Plate

Spode is a historic ceramic manufacturer founded in Stoke-on-Trent, England in 1770 by Josiah Spode. Around 1784, they developed a technique for underglaze painting using copperplate transfer technology, and later perfected fine bone china, a transparent white ceramic. In the early 19th century, they received the honor of being a purveyor to the British Royal Family, and produced many pieces beloved around the world, such as Blue Italian, which depicts an ancient Roman motif. Currently, they are under the umbrella of Portmeirion, and continue to preserve their traditions and craftsmanship.

This "Blue Italian" design was first introduced in 1816 and is a Spode signature design that has been loved for over 200 years. The design is painted with copperplate transfer printing to depict ancient Roman scenes and is bordered with Imari-style oriental patterns. This blue and white design was popular among both the working and upper classes. It features elegant landscapes of Italian ruins and rural scenes, and decorative borders with floral and foliage patterns.
